Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum showcases a wide variety of restored aircraft, along with marine and space exhibits on the now decommissioned USS Intrepid aircraft carrier

Since 1982, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum has invited visitors to explore naval aviation and maritime history through a collection of restored military vessels docked in the Hudson River on Manhattan's West Side. Before being decommissioned in 1974, USS Intrepid served in World War II, as a recovery ship for NASA and in the Vietnam War. The museum opened in 1982, after New York real estate developer, Zachary Fischer saved the aircraft carrier from the scrapheap and now showcases a cruise missile submarine, the USS Growler, a British Airways Concorde supersonic jet, and a Lockheed A-12 CIA reconnaissance plane. In 2011, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum added a NASA prototype of the Space Shuttle Enterprise to its collection which is schedule to be available for public viewing in the near future.

Admission to Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum covers access to the aircraft carrier, the submarine and the Concorde with free guided tours included in the ticket price. On the Flight Deck, visitors can explore a world class collection of 30 restored aircraft and climb to the navigation bridge for a cinematic view of the New York City skyline. The Hangar Deck engages visitors with variety of interactive, hands-on exhibits demonstrating the technology and manpower required to power the 40,000 tonne vessel. The newly restored Gallery and Third Decks, home to the Ready Room and Combat Information Center, offer a unique insight into life aboard the ship the 3,000 enlisted men. In the newly opened Mess Hall, visitors can enjoy lunch or a snack at Au Bon Pain in recreated sailor's dining room. Well-worth the additional charge is a visit to the Virtual Flight Zone offering a supersonic flight simulators and a 4D Motion Theatre.
