Museum of Modern Art
Museum of Modern Art offers 6 floors of intriguing exhibits
In late 1920s, Mrs. John D. Rockefeller and other influential patrons of the arts challenged the conservative traditional museums by establishing the Museum of Modern Art to educate New York's citizens to understand and enjoy the visual arts of our time. Beginning with a contribution of nine artworks, the Museum of Modern Art's collection has grown to include 150,000 sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings and design objects.
With six floors of exhibits, including an extensive permanent collection and ever-changing special exhibits, there is a lot to see at the Museum of Modern Art. Audio tours offer a wealth of information and are included in the price of admission; specialty audio tours geared towards children are also available. Gallery talks on the historical context and cultural significance of specific collections are given by museum lecturers twice daily.
For a self-guided tour, take the elevator to the fifth floor and begin in the Painting and Sculpture Galleries and follow the escalators through the collections. Interactive information kiosks are available on the first and second floors of the museum and Smartphone users take advantage of free Wi-Fi throughout the museum by downloading the Museum of Modern Art app with five multi-lingual audio tour options and an index of all artwork.
If you want to take a break from the galleries, the Museum of Modern Art offers film screenings included in the cost of admission. Tickets for screenings can also be purchased separately and the cost of the film ticket can be applied to the price of museum admission, if presented within 30 days. In the summer months, you can relax with a gelato in the Sculpture Garden and cafe-style fare is available from the Terrace 5 year-round. For a more formal dining experience, try The Modern or the Bar Room; reservations are essential at The Modern.
