The Canal St Martin Boutiques are really special and many of them have an interesting history behind them.

The Hotel du Nord was featured in a film by Marcel Carne of the same name. It was in this movie that the entire Canal area was replicated in the stage settings. The original hotel was built in 1885 for the manual labourers that used to primarily populate the area before it caught the eye of the professional crowd.

For those who wish to "see and be seen", the Chez Prune is the restaurant come bar to visit. The decoration in the bar is made of recycled objects that most would have considered junk. You are welcome to sit on the terrace with your drink and watch the life on the canal go by.

If you are not in the mood to sit inside a restaurant then the Pink Flamingo offers something a little different. The concept is unique. You go in, order and pay for your pizza. You are then given a pink balloon and you can go find a spot to sit on the banks of the canal. Make sure that you do not lose that balloon though as this is how your waiter will find you and deliver your scrumptious pizza.

Aside from all the interesting restaurants and cafes, there are a number of curio stores and boutique clothing shops to browse. It can be very tempting to spend a lot so be sure you set a budget before you head out.

With all of this interesting scenery and the different restaurants and boutiques to visit, it is no wonder that the Canal St Martin has become such a popular place to spend a Sunday afternoon. There is literally something for everyone here, no matter what your preferences are.
