Nice old pub not too far from Guildhall Art Gallery. Staff were friendly and welcoming and there was a good selection of beers on tap. The jazz music playing made it feel really relaxing

A recent lunchtime visit on Tuesday, August 12th, revealed some disappointing shortcomings. The most glaring issue was the inconsistent presence of staff at the bar. Far too often, it was left unattended, leaving customers waiting and creating a sense of neglect. Observing staff members chatting out back, engrossed in their mobile phones while patrons inside were left unattended, only compounded the frustration.
Furthermore, the sight of empty glasses accumulating outside detracted from the pub's overall appeal. While the pub's historical charm and prime location are undeniable, the inattentive service significantly undermines the experience.
Despite these issues, the pub's potential is clear, and I am willing to give The Old Doctor Butler Head another try. I hope staff can be trained up to a potential level of customer service satisfaction and that it can be looked into by management. With a more dedicated and customer-focused staff, it could truly shine as a jewel in the city's pub scene, offering an experience that matches its historical charm.

I visited The Old Doctor Butler’s Head today and, while I usually enjoy my time here, an unexpected incident occurred during my visit that left me with mixed feelings.
The situation arose suddenly and could have quickly escalated. What truly stood out was the way one member of staff, along with two of their colleagues behind the bar, handled it. Despite clearly being understaffed and in the middle of serving, this particular team member Molly went above and beyond to defuse the situation swiftly and calmly. Their professionalism and quick action made all the difference and ensured things didn’t get out of hand.
However, I was disappointed to see that no other staff or management appeared to help until after the incident had already been brought under control. At a time when support was most needed, the frontline staff were left to manage on their own. That lack of immediate backup was concerning, especially considering how quickly the situation developed.
I want to sincerely thank the team member who stepped up — your efforts did not go unnoticed and are truly appreciated. You exemplified what it means to go above and beyond in difficult circumstances.

Small but pleasant old style pub with some interesting history. For those with a preference for Shepard's neane drinks will enjoy.

Back alley classic London pub hidden in a narrow lane of the City. Superb London street drinking. Dark wood Victorian city pub interior. Excellent larger than it looks, split level drinking hall with plenty of open space, quiet corners and mix of vintage, leather studded, wood framed corner benches and high stools. Wood panelled walls and brilliant wood beamed ceiling. Glass paned and balustrades divide the space creating and open feeling, yet secluded and private corners. Excellent, retained features and layout allow you to imagine pub history from over a hundred years ago. Well balanced sounds, an place for open chat with groups, this pub has character on tap.

We dined at their private room which was light and airy. The acoustic was good as well so it didn't feel echo-ing when conversations were flowing. My steak wasn't great but the rest of the food was good.

Outstanding 3course lunch for £19.95 pp . Highly recommended. A great stop before going to a theatre matinee or an early dinner before visiting a show. These days one looks for value for money and Goucho definitely is. We will be back

Enjoyable lunch was had here by a group of 6. From arrival upstairs and the friendly service of our first drink, to the attentive service throughout our stay. The chateaubriand sharing board was absolutely divine. Special thanks to Ismael who provided exceptional service

That was my first time here in Gaucho, I was attracted by its serenity of the group floor, where was also the bar. However, I was here for dinner, so I went to the downstairs which is a busier place. Food are recommended by the waiter, Nikita (a very nice waiter:) , I ordered 200g rump and the banana pancake with ice cream. Both of the dishes are beyond expectations. The ice cream has fillings inside, which enriched the overall texture and taste, but also balance the sweetness of the banana pancake.
For the rump, it is so good, and I lost word to describe its special and raw flavour, but all I can say is it tastes a bit like iron and wood. I love it!
And I appreciate Nitika’s good service, he was not only attentive, detail-oriented, caring, but he was also very helpful which gave me a perfect dinner.

We visited in early June and I've only now realised I have forgotten to write my review of this special occasion.
Our dear friends invited us for a dinner to their favourite Hawksmoor location. In fact his was our first time at any Hawksmoor and we were pleasantly surprised by the overall experience.
All food and drinks were mouthwatering, delicious and of high quality.
The atmosphere and ambience were just perfect for our needs. We received attentive but not intrusive service.
Lavatories were clean and well looked after.
We definitely recommend and look forward visiting again soon.
Thank you

We enjoyed a memorable anniversary meal at Hawksmoor Guildhall. We choose the early dinner meal, for which the taste and quantities were amazing - incredible value for money.
What really made the evening for us was Gabriel, who looked after us beautifully and arranged an unforgettable desert accompanied by delicious port selections.
Well done to Gabriel and the whole team at Hawksmoor !

I visited Hawksmoor this past Sunday and had an incredible dining experience. We ordered the Chateau, Fillet Steak (both cooked medium), and the Sunday Roast. The steaks were absolutely phenomenal without a doubt, some of the best I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, juicy, and bursting with flavor.
The staff were also kind, professional, and genuinely friendly, which really elevated the whole experience. I also highly recommend pairing the fillet with their 10-year-old tawny port. It was such a delightful combination and added a rich, smooth finish to the meal.
Highly recommend Hawksmoor for anyone looking for top-tier food and service!

Met with friends. The bar staff are great as are the Shakey Pete drinks. You must try them
Service was great. Andrea a lovely Spanish lady served us and made it a much better evening. Great food with great starters. Good atmosphere and very good staff throughout

We had a wonderful meal and the staff were outstanding - very polite, didn't hassle us to order quickly but were very responsive when we were ready. We much appreciated an unsolicited additional side dish when our preference of steak was not available and the free dessert as a birthday treat! This place is not cheap but the quality of food and service is high. BYO with corkage on a Monday means you can afford a very good wine with your meal.

We hosted a client event in a corner of this pub. Food was great, though not very varied. The staff were fantastic, especially a female with dark hair - great service. Choice of drinks is adequate. The place had a good buzz, which we all enjoyed. Overall, I would recommend for a pint or even hosting a small event.

We had two and one pint of Jubel, with their green curry and steak pie.
The beer and the meals were both awesome. Not to large, not too salty, plenty of flavor. The beer was refreshing and perfect after w day exploring London.
Brilliant service from a very friendly staff. If you see and friendly Romanian with a fantastic mustache - you're in good hands.
Music is a great play list of slick 90s memories. Atmosphere is what I would want out of any pub in the area.
Well priced, very similar to what we'd pay back home in Canada. For the same food and service.
Recommend.

Visited this venue for an Alice in Wonderland themed night with Taste Film.

Went to TasteFilm to see Chef in April 2025. Was a bit difficult to find the location but once inside the atmosphere is cozy, warm and the host was really welcoming.
The quiz at the start breaks the ice and gets you in the mood for the film.
The food is AMAZING. It's small portions but you leave feeling full as the courses are spread over 2 hours. The menu is well thought out and extremely tasty. Ordering extra drinks is quick and easy with a QR code on the table. 10/10!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be coming back with my mum next time!

We popped into The Refinery for a pre-show meal before a concert in The Barbican. It's perfectly located for that purpose and worked out well for us with fast, friendly service and tasty food. You do have to venture inside to find the tables though because much of the space is given over to being a busy bar.
In terms of food we kept it pretty simple and I went for the fish pie with some onion rings. These were both very enjoyable and efficiently prepared. It would have been nice if the pie could have been a little larger or delivered with a side of vegetables (since it costs £16.95) but this wasn't a deal-breaker.

Highly recommend! We already went 2 times; Monsters Inc and Beauty and the Beast and both were superb! Really fun, very well thought, creative, detail oriented and incredibly executed experience! Staff, the food, the service was excellent! I cannot wait to go back again!

Booked on to see ‘Home Alone 2’ for the Taste film experience. Whilst the atmosphere, service and entertainment were impeccable, the food did lack in terms of taste and quality. I recommend coming here for the experience to see your favourite films, as it is still a fun day out.

The pasta and coffee combination sounds bit awkward but that’s what I bought from Coco Di Mama and I never regretted my decision. I am all time pasta lover but coffee is something I am very particular about and here I did t get disappointed. The taste of coffee is something specially different. #vikrmn

I love the coffee here - it's smooth, well-rounded and flavoursome without being bitter. And it's consistently good too. The queue to pick up the coffee can be a bit haphazard and annoying, but they always get the order correct and it's worth it. The breakfast pots are tasty too - the avocado and egg pot is healthy without being dull to eat. The sourdough breakfast baguette is actually as well filled and tasty as the menu photo suggests!

Incredible. Had my hen party here and it was so good. The food isn’t what you go there for so I get it’s not the best quality. But the vibes, fun and party make up for it! So so good highly recommend for fun with your besties!!

We hosted our work Christmas party for a group of 126 people, and it was absolutely fantastic! From the very beginning, the communication with the team was excellent—every detail was handled smoothly and efficiently.
The staff on the night were super helpful and incredibly friendly, making sure everyone felt welcome and taken care of. The three-course meal was delicious, with plenty of compliments from our team about the quality of the food.
They were also extremely accommodating when our live band arrived to set up. The space worked perfectly for both the seated dinner and the band’s performance, creating a great atmosphere for the evening.
I can’t recommend Austin Friars Balls Brothers enough for any large event or party. A huge thank you to the team for helping us create such a memorable night!

Came by for a quick drink. Located at the rear of Liverpool Street station. Tables outside.Sports on show. Great choice of drinks at usual London prices. Service was...well it looks like the guy who served us, it was probably his first shift, obviously a bit slow and kept asking people for assistance on what to do (I do understand, everyone's got to start somewhere, but on a busy day when they're showing a big football match?) nice vibe to the place, obviously very sporty on the day we went.I imagine it's a really nice place when sports events aren't showing and you have little kids in the pub trying to sell you scarves.

Came to see if the service had improved in the past couple of years. It has not. The main theme here is bag thieves, which the pub is taking very seriously (which is appreciated). Bar service, not so much. High prices despite all of the above.

Met up with an old work colleague whom I've not seen (we think) in about 15 years or more. Book table and opened tab staff very friendly and accommodating as I was in a wheelchair . Defo will use this pub again when next in London.

The Railway Tavern — Disappointing Service in an Otherwise Promising Pub We visited The Railway Tavern hoping for a relaxed evening near Liverpool Street, but unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. While the pub itself is charming and the menu looked promising, the staff seemed inattentive and disengaged. We waited far too long to be acknowledged, and even basic requests felt like an inconvenience.
There was no warmth or effort to make guests feel welcome — a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere and positive reviews we’d read beforehand. It’s a shame, because the setting has potential, and the food was decent once it finally arrived.
A pub with character, but let down by indifferent service. We won’t be rushing back.
