Treptower Park

Ranked one of the best parks in Berlin, Treptower Park is a large 207-acre park that runs along the banks of the River Spree.
Treptower Park is probably best known for the Soviet War Memorial designed and built in 1949 in remembrance of the 80,000 who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945.
Visiting the memorial and reflecting upon the soldiers, both Russian and non-Russian, who finally put a finish to the Nazi regime is a must as one reflects on the freedom we have to enjoy this magnificent park.
Start from the Treptower Park train station with a walk, bike or jog along the 4-kilometre riverside path where you can enjoy the changing view and the sight of pleasure boats, paddleboats and houseboats plying the river.
During your stroll, take a small detour from the river path to see the beautiful rose garden.
Farther along, walk across the picturesque Abteibrücke footbridge to Insel der Jugend (Island of Youth) and refresh yourself at one of two beer gardens or workout at the outdoor Calisthenics Park.
Consider renting a paddleboat or taking a sightseeing cruise on the Spree from one of the boat rental or tour operators near Insel der Jugend.
Continuing southeast, keep your eye out for the old SpreePark Ferris wheel, one of the rides in a historic amusement park dating back the GDR days. It hasn’t been operational for many years, but there are plans to bring some kind of amusement park back to life here. On weekends you can take a guided tour of the old site.
If you reach the far end of the park, just for fun, you can enjoy a short 2-minute ride (each way) across the River Spree on the F11 passenger ferry.
On your return walk, take the wooded inland paths and don’t miss the Soviet War Memorial if you didn’t see it yet.
Treptower Park is large, offering a beautiful diverse landscape and many activities. Plan on spending a least 3 to 4 hours. A full day is even better.

Fabulous park. Has a very moving memorial to the Russian soldiers who saved the East Berliners from the Nazis.
Lovely cafe's and plenty to do. Has a river running through it.

A calm escape in the middle of Berlin
I visited Treptower Park on a sunny afternoon and honestly, I was surprised by how peaceful and spacious it felt. It’s not as touristy as Tiergarten, which makes it feel more relaxed and local. You’ll see people walking their dogs, riding bikes, having picnics — just enjoying life at a slower pace.
One of the most impressive parts of the park is definitely the Soviet War Memorial. It’s massive and incredibly moving. Whether or not you’re into history, it’s worth seeing — very powerful and beautifully designed.
The walk along the river is lovely too. There are little spots where you can sit and watch the boats pass by. I even saw people renting pedal boats and cruising around. Next time, I’d totally try that.
What I liked most is how the park balances everything — there’s history, nature, space to just chill, and it doesn’t feel overcrowded. It’s one of those places where you can take a deep breath and just unwind. If you’re in Berlin and want a break from the noise of the city, this is a perfect place to go.

Great park! Probably the finest for all you can imagine - hanging with friends, boating, going to a beer garden, people watching, etc…

Treptower Park is one of Berlin's most beautiful and peaceful green spaces, perfect for relaxing, exploring history, or enjoying nature by the Spree River. As a student living in Berlin, I found this park to be a wonderful escape from the city’s hustle, offering both scenic beauty and historical depth.
One of the highlights of Treptower Park is the Soviet War Memorial, a massive and moving tribute to the soldiers who died in World War II. The monument is impressive in scale and design, and walking through it feels both powerful and reflective. It's an important reminder of Berlin's layered past.
The park itself is spacious and full of tree-lined paths, open meadows, and riverside spots. It’s ideal for walking, jogging, biking, or just sitting by the water with a book. You can also find boat rentals and enjoy a peaceful ride on the river. On weekends, the park is lively but not overcrowded, making it a great place to meet friends or have a picnic.
With its mix of nature, history, and calm atmosphere, Treptower Park is definitely one of my favorite places in Berlin. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, it’s well worth a visit.
